19th “Islands of the World” Conference

19th ISLAND OF THE WORLD CONFERENCE

Islands and Resilience: Global Opportunities

_MG_3705

Islands are ahead: at the forefront and cutting edge of technological and policy innovation as well as at the frontline of economic, health, social, cultural, and environmental changes that are spreading across the globe.

The movement toward greater island sustainability requires the locally oriented and integrated study of diverse aspects of island life. Existing and nascent challenges related to health crises, climate and ocean change, economic uncertainty, fisheries decline, cultural transformation, threats to biodiversity, and rapid technological shifts simultaneously require local, island-based solutions and international networks of island learning and exchange. Yet the increasing attention being paid to islands and the increasing interconnectedness of islands and the rest of the world offers island societies new, global opportunities. Today more than ever, it is being asked: How can islands develop solutions that suit their own needs? How can tourism, the Blue economy, distinctive cultures, emerging technologies, and marine and terrestrial environments contribute to making islands stronger, more resilient, capable of providing global leadership without losing sight of local needs?

These and other issues will be discussed at the 19th Islands of the World conference, held at the University of Mataram on the island of Lombok, Indonesia between the 25th to 29th of June, 2024. As the first Islands of the World conference to be held in Southeast Asia, located in the world’s largest archipelago, at the meeting point of two oceans, this conference represents an unprecedented coming together of peoples, ideas, cultures, and research traditions. It is a conference that honors the growing network of international island cooperation and relation.

The conference is open to attendees from both Indonesia and overseas. We are also seeking proposals for presentations on any and all aspects of island life. Proposals are especially encouraged that fall within the theme of ‘Islands and Resilience: Global Opportunities’. This conference theme is split into the following six subthemes:

  1. Climate change and environment
  2. Island governance
  3. Blue economy
  4. Island cultures
  5. Island networks and digital ecosystems
  6. Island and small state development

Abstracts of 150-200 words are now invited on any of the identified conference themes, identified above. These should be accompanied by the full name, institutional affiliation, and e-mails of the author/s. The Abstracts should be submitted before 20 January 2024. To submit an abstract, please follow the instructions here: https://ccmrsconference.ipb.ac.id/isisa-iwcix2024-important-dates/#abstract-submission

About the Conference Location

Lombok is a culturally and environmentally rich island in the vast Southeast Asian archipelago. Ringed by islands large and small, possessing brilliant beaches, imposing cliffs, verdant forests, stunning mountain landscapes, vibrant villages, and bustling cities, Lombok is a place of fantastic diversity.

University of Mataram, founded in 1962, has become an important center for island research and exchange. During and after the conference, delegates will have the opportunity to explore the city of Mataram, the wider island, and outlying small islands, through a series of activities aimed at bringing the conference out into Lombok’s communities. On the 25th of June and 29th of June, there will be group excursions to Senggigi Coastal Village/Gili Bidara and Gili Gede respectively.
